a Little About

Mary Cox

Mary Cox is a Seattle-based interior designer passionate about color and design. Incorporating her resourceful decorating style with her incredible eye for color, she has been highly successful in creating imaginative environments for over 25 years. Her projects have taken her to New York, New Jersey, Kentucky, Florida, Colorado, Washington, Oregon, and California. She is a member of the NWSID (Northwest Society of Interior Designers), has written numerous design articles for magazines and newspapers, and was recently featured in Costco Magazine, Do it Best Hardware National HOME magazine. She has also won awards for her commercial remodels.

Mary firmly believes that good design is all about emotions. How does a space make you feel when it’s completed? And she puts great effort into discovering how the client wants to feel when the space is completed. With her passion for creativity, her journey has gone down many roads.

After her art and design schooling back East, she went from opening an English Saddlery (The Bridle Suite) in Westchester County, New York’s horse country, then selling it, to moving to Seattle and opening a custom specialty gift company (Surprise) that catered to corporations and celebrities ranging from Bill Gates to Pearl Jam. At the same time, she also worked with the hotel industry as an events coordinator designing themes for events ranging from weddings, and corporate theme parties (like designing a banquet room to look like a Pictionary game), to planning and implementing a 4-day gala Derby Party in Lexington, Kentucky for 175 people. Then a large commercial developer asked if she could decorate their model home, and a Little Accent was born. She then sold Surprise, and word-of-mouth recommendations led to other commercial developers contacting her for the remodeling of their clubhouse/welcome centers and decorating their model homes. Almost 17 years later, a Little Accent has remodeled over 40 residential housing community projects throughout Washington and Oregon and won the Kent Best Renovation award.

Her broad background encompasses designing numerous residential remodels and other commercial applications, including remodels of two YMCAs’, the décor of Italianissmo Restaurant, a dental office, a physical therapy center, and just recently, the redesign of a popular Bellevue Pet Grooming shop. She has authored and published articles on design and especially the effects of color in Commercial Developers magazines and local newspapers.

Mary had the unique opportunity of decorating two fabulous horse farms in the beautiful bluegrass country of Lexington, Kentucky, redoing a former Seattle client’s new home in Breckenridge, Colorado, and a fun home makeover in Marlboro, New Jersey. As you’ve probably figured out by now, Mary has a lot of energy, so I’m sure this won’t shock you – but she was also a TV commercial actress and print model for over eight years during that time.

Her other lifelong passion has been horses. She has ridden and competed in Hunter-Jumper competitions since she was a child and, in the past years, has turned her interest to Dressage.
